After almost 8 months of trying to duplicate the problem that some
people have reported with Windows 7 caching or delaying incoming sound
streams, I was finally able to get one of my test machines to duplicate
the problem and on a semi consistent bases.
Having this machine locally allowed me to run diagnostic versions of the client in order to trace down the problem.
As expected the problem is in Windows 7 itself and we have reported the
problem to Microsoft with very detailed information about what the
problem is. We do not know if or when Microsoft will be able to solve
the problem and we look forward to hearing back from them and to
provide any additional information or diagnostic work to help them
resolve the issue.
Thankfully, Ventrilo users need not wait for Microsoft to solve the
problem because you can do this yourself on the client side. You need
only enable the "Use DirectSound" for the Output device in 3 sections
of the program. These sections are listed below and with pictures."
